This checklist serves as a roadmap, guiding you through each course building step to maximize the benefits of using Codon Learning for both you and your students. Please check each box as you go.
At any step, please contact your Educational Support Specialist for valuable support and to share feedback with the Codon team.
1. Get started with Codon
Is Codon right for my course?
- Log into the Codon Learning app and complete the “Welcome to Codon” assignment in the demo
- module (under Student Courses).

- Familiarize yourself with the Codon topics and learning objectives to consider which are important for
- your students.
I want to use Codon, what’s next?
Schedule a 30-minute meeting with your ESS to begin building your course.
- Share a current or past syllabus with your ESS (including your topics and schedule) to help them
- understand the structure of your course in preparation for the first meeting.
- Contact your Learning Management System (LMS) or IT administrator about integrating Codon with
- your LMS (template email).
Contact your bookstore (template email).
- Optional: Join the Codon Community Slack Workspace for more immediate support from your ESS
- and to connect with other instructors using Codon.
2. Build your course
How do I start building my course?
ESS Meeting 1 Agenda:
Walk through this Checklist for Success.
Add a new course and tailor to your schedule (dates, class days, non-class days, exam days). ℹ️
Learn how to use the Course Planner and Learning Objective Selector.
Build the “Welcome to Codon” student onboarding assignment. ℹ️
Discuss the type and frequency of assignments and the grading policies for each.
- Build one of each assignment type (pre-class assessment or readiness reading, homework, and
- Study Path).
Decide on next steps and action items with your ESS and schedule the next 30-minute meeting.
How do I build the rest of my course?
Assign topics to every class session in the Course Planner. ℹ️
Add lesson-level learning objectives to every class day. ℹ️
Optional: Write custom learning objectives for areas not covered by Codon content.
- Revisit the “Welcome to Codon” student onboarding assignment in the demo module to make sure
- you understand how the platform works.
Set Assignment Presets including open/due/late dates and grading policies.
Build and publish all assignments up to the first Study Path.

Test LMS integration using the link provided by your ESS. ℹ️
Send your ESS any questions that come up via Slack or email.
Am I ready for students?
ESS Meeting 2 Agenda:
Incorporate slides provided by your ESS into your first day slide deck.
- Customize a sample message to include on your LMS course page, in an email to students, and/or in
- your syllabus.
Confirm LMS integration and grade sync. ℹ️
Final check of your course prior to student access date.
3. Start your course
How do I help students get started?
Communicate to students how they will access Codon Learning.
Encourage students to complete the “Welcome to Codon” onboarding assignment.
Optional: Ask your ESS to enroll any TAs/LAs in the course as students.
Encourage students to email support@codonlearning.com with Codon-specific issues or questions.
How do I ensure student success with the Study Path?
Encourage students to complete the “How to use the Study Path” onboarding assignment.
Align your summative assessment using your lesson-level LOs.
- Important: Build and publish the next Study Path before the previous one is due. Understanding how
- point recapture works is also helpful. ℹ️
4. Get ready for next term
Did Codon have a positive impact on my students?
Encourage students to complete the Codon student feedback survey.
- Look over aggregated survey responses and platform usage data from your students provided by
- your ESS.
Share feedback and ideas for improvement with your ESS - the good, the bad, the ugly.
Think about changes you want to make to your course next time.
Optional: Schedule a debrief with your ESS.
How can I use my course again next time?
Let your ESS know of your plans to use Codon next semester/year.
Schedule a 30-minute meeting with your ESS to discuss changes and duplicate your course.
Optional: Reach out to colleagues who may also be interested in using Codon.
