Course Planner overview

This article discusses how to use the Course Planner. Use the Course Planner to set your course schedule (adding non-class days and announcements on class days), select topics and learning objectives (LOs) for each class day, and move topics and LOs from one day to another.

How to set non-class class days

To add holidays, breaks, or other non-class days:

  1. click the blue gear on the left side of the class day
  2. select Add Label to Class Day
  3. name the non-class day
  4. select No Class and click Save

How to add announcements to class days

To add an announcement on a class day, such as an exam or other summative assessment, a field trip, or other special class day:

  1. click the blue gear on the left side of the class day
  2. select Add Label to Class Day
  3. enter the class day label (example: Exam 1) and select Save
  4. your class day label should now appear as:

How to select topics and learning objectives

For each day of class that covers content, select Add LOs on the right side of that day. This will open the learning objective selector:

Learning objectives in Codon are organized into units and topics. Browse through the bank of Codon learning objectives by selecting a topic from the left side of the screen to see the learning objectives within that topic:

If you only want to select the topic (no learning objectives), click on the blue plus sign next to the topic (Proteins, in the example above).

To select learning objectives, click the blue plus sign next to learning objective(s) you want to add to that class day. You will see the selected learning objective appear above the learning objective selector.

If you want to preview the content available for a given learning objective, click on the dropdown menu to the right of the "+" sign:

Click the X on the right side of the learning objective selector to close it for that class day.

How to select topics and learning objectives

If you don't find a particular topic or learning objective in the Codon Learning content, you can add your own.

To add a custom topic, click Add LOs for the class day and then click on Create Custom: Topic.

To add a custom learning objective, click Add LOs for the class day and then click on Create Custom: LO. Select the topic to which you want the LO aligned, either a Codon topic or one of your own custom topics.

You can read more in the support article about adding custom LOs and modifying Codon's LOs.

How to move topics and LOs to another class day (or remove them)

Select the kebab (three vertical dots) menu in the blue line next to the topic name you want to move, then select Move [topic name] to Another Class Session.

Select the new day you want to move the topic to on the right side of the screen.

Frequently asked questions

1) I like just seeing the list of topics (like the old course planner), is there a way to only see the topics for each day (without all the LOs)?

Yes, you can toggle between LO View and Topic View:

2) I added a learning objective to the wrong day. How do I move it to another class day?

We are currently improving this functionality for a future version of the new enhanced course planner. The easiest way to fix this for now is to remove the LO from the wrong day, then add it to the right day.
