1. Log into your LMS and open your course.
2. Create a Module.

3. Name the Module. In this example we've named the module "Codon Learning - assignments completion." Click "Add Module."

4. Click the plus sign to "Add Item" to the module.

5. Select Add "External tool" from the dropdown menu.

Starting Fall 2025, Codon now supports two modes of LMS integration. Before moving to step 6, determine whether your institution has a direct Codon integration or an integration via Follett/Willo Labs. If you're not sure, check the email where you received a link to this article, or ask your ESS!
If your institution supports direct integration
6. Select Codon Learning Direct LTI 1.3 from the list of external tools.
a. The page name automatically populates, but you can change it if you like.
b. Make sure to check Load in a new tab if it is not already checked.
c. Continue to Step 7.
If your institution uses integration via Follett/Willo Labs
6. Scroll past the list of tools and locate the URL field at the bottom of the window (see picture below)
a. Enter the URL specific to your institution, provided by your ESS.
b. Enter a Page Name like "Codon Learning."
c. Make sure to check Load in a new tab if it is not already checked.
d. Continue to Step 7.
7. Click blue "Add Item" button.
8. Click on the Codon Learning link you just added to your course.

9. Click Load Codon Learning in a new window.

10. Select your course (you may only have one in the list).
a. Click Save Selection. This is a one time step for each course.

11. You should see a message "Please close this page and relaunch your Codon Learning course from your LMS." This means you are successfully connected.
12. When you relaunch the course from the LMS, you will see Codon’s instructor course homepage.

13. Make sure that you publish the Module so that it is visible to students.


FYI: How students access Codon
*They will also receive these instructions in the first day / onboarding materials sent to you by your ESS.
1. Students click on Canvas Modules.
2. Students click on the Codon Learning link.
3. Students click Load Codon Learning in a New Window.
4. The first time students click this link, their account is created in Codon automatically. They will be asked to review the Terms of Service and then they will proceed into your course.
5. Going forward, they will return to the Canvas link to sign in to Codon.
