The Codon Learning Study Path is designed to help you focus your studying efforts on the topics and learning objectives you found challenging and boost your knowledge with effective study strategies like self-testing.

Video Overview of the Codon Study Path

Benefits of working through the Study Path every few days:
  • Spacing: Spreading out your learning has been shown to improve long term memory compared to cramming the night before the test, which means you’re more likely to retain this knowledge not only for the test, but for the final exam if you have one, for future courses, and in your career!
  • Self-Testing: You can retry homework or preclass questions, answer new prep questions related to each learning objective, and complete a practice test to test your understanding of the topics and learning objectives. Research shows that self-testing is among the MOST effective study strategy compared to less effective strategies like re-reading the textbook.
  • Monitoring: Keeping track of what you do and do not know helps you realize what topics and learning objectives you need to focus on to study efficiently.

Study Path Process:

Move topic cards from Checkpoint 1 to Checkpoint 3 to unlock a practice test by answering questions. Questions are linked to the learning objectives within each topic card. Topic cards first appear in the Study Path when you complete a homework assignment.

Checkpoint 1 - I Should Review

  • This is where you recapture points from Pre-class (Pre) or Homework (HW) assignments, if any are available.
  • Topic cards appear in Checkpoint 1 on your Study Path when you answer questions incorrectly in your homework assignment.
  • Reflecting on confusing questions and quizzing yourself is a highly effective study strategy.
  • Retry questions here to move each topic card to the Prep Me checkpoint. You might even be able to recapture some points you missed as long as it's before the assignment due date!

Checkpoint 2 - Prep Me

  • This is where you find Prep Questions.
  • Prep Questions give you the opportunity to get extra practice and strengthen your understanding of each learning objective.
  • You can see if your instructor assigned Prep Questions for points by checking the Assignments page.
  • Topic cards move to Checkpoint 2 when you correctly answer questions in your homework assignment or in Checkpoint 1.
  • Correctly answer these prep questions to move each topic card to the Test Me! checkpoint.

Check 3 - Test Me!

  • Topic cards move to Checkpoint 3 when you correctly answer prep questions in Checkpoint 2.
  • The Practice Test Meter indicates your progress. Once the meter reaches 100%, take the Practice Test to see how prepared you are for the real thing.
  • Testing yourself makes clear what you know and what you don’t know so that you can prioritize your study time. See this article for details and tip on How to Take the Practice Test.
